Deprograming My Relationship With Food

May 01, 2021

I never really stopped or looked back at my experiences with body image or with eating habits until I had my conversation last week with Dr Carine El Khazen, VP of the Middle East Eating Disorder Association.

What started as a discussion about my internal transformation and the pressure on working moms, became a reflection about the challenges a woman faces in today’s world, when it comes to how she looks.
I personally grew up fascinated by the super model era. Yes, they were a lot sexier and ‘fuller’ compared to the models our daughters are seeing today, but they still didn’t look anything like I did!!!

The conversation with Dr Carine made me think of my days as a confused teenager, with raging hormones, self soothing with food, and indulging in the North American way of eating! There was no awareness back then really to living a balanced life, there were no role models around me or highlighted examples of healthy lifestyles. What I saw were all extremes: indulgence until it was time for deprivation ... You lose weight and everyone raves about how great you look, until you are starving, then you give up and you succumb to indulgence! And on and on and on...

As long as I could remember, I dieted. I went from the GM soup diet ( anyone remember that horrible cabbage soup!? ), to the notorious Dukan diet, then we discovered the blood type diet, then Paleo, then Keto, then intermittent fasting, then... I can’t even keep up!!

So what are we really doing to ourselves? Why can’t we just accept our shapes, eat when we are hungry, fill our bodies with the good stuff and not deprive ourselves from the sweet ones, in moderation...
